Diesel is priced differently from petrol in Australia, and understanding the difference changes how you shop for it. Petrol Australia shows live, government-verified diesel prices at stations across all states and territories — including premium diesel where sold.

Why doesn't diesel follow the weekly price cycle?

The sawtooth weekly cycle you see in petrol — discount, discount, discount, sharp restore — barely exists for diesel. Diesel prices mainly track the international refined diesel price and move gradually with wholesale costs. Reasons:

• A large share of diesel is sold to commercial and fleet buyers on contract, not to price-shopping motorists
• Retail diesel margins aren't used as a weekly promotional lever the way petrol margins are

Practical upshot: with petrol, when you fill matters enormously; with diesel, where you fill matters most. Station-to-station spread is the saving to chase.

Why is diesel more expensive than petrol (or sometimes cheaper)?

Diesel and petrol are different refined products with separate international benchmark prices. Their gap moves with global demand — diesel typically runs dearer in the southern winter and when global distillate demand is strong, and the two can cross over. The same ~50c/L federal excise and 10% GST apply to both.
