Will Petrol Go Up Tomorrow? Fill Up Today or Wait
Whether petrol goes up tomorrow depends on where your city sits in its price cycle — and in one state, the answer isn't a prediction at all. Here's how to answer it properly for your city, today.
The one-minute answer
Open Petrol Australia and tap the Analytics button on the map. The Insights panel reads the last 30 days of prices for your state and fuel type and gives you one of six plain signals — the two that answer this page's question directly:
- Top up now — prices are rising; filling today beats tomorrow
- Hold off if you can — prices are falling; waiting 2–4 days should beat today
No chart reading required — though a graph view is there if you want it.
In WA, tomorrow's prices are already public
Perth is the only capital where "will petrol go up tomorrow?" has a definite answer: under FuelWatch, every WA station submits its next-day price by 2 PM, and that price takes effect at 6 AM and holds for 24 hours. If tomorrow is dearer, fill tonight; if it's cheaper, wait for 6 AM.
Cheapest day to fill up, city by city
Typical patterns (the live cycle can shift — check Insights before trusting the calendar):
| City | Usually cheapest | Usually dearest |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | Monday–Tuesday | After the Tuesday–Wednesday spike |
| Melbourne | Day before the spike | Tuesday–Wednesday spike day |
| Brisbane | Late in the falling phase | Mid-week spike |
| Adelaide | Monday | Tuesday–Wednesday |
| Perth | Wednesday–Thursday | Weekend/early week |
| Canberra | Around Monday | Mid-week |
| Hobart / Darwin | Little weekly pattern — compare stations instead | — |
Let the app watch instead of you
- Price-cycle notifications send three pushes that answer this page automatically: Drop incoming (hold off), Buy now (cycle bottom), and Top up before rise (last call before the jump). Set a home location and turn them on — see Notifications & quiet hours.
- Price alerts notify you the moment your regular station drops below your target price.
What can break the pattern?
Public holidays (prices often restore before long weekends), sharp crude oil or exchange-rate moves, and supply disruptions can all shift or flatten the cycle. That's why the app's signals are computed from live data rather than a fixed weekly calendar.
